making progress...slowly

I actually feel like I am starting to make some progress. That’s not to say I haven’t been learning anything up until now, but certain things are staring to click. I struggled the past few nights trying to get through a javascript/jQuery exercise with the odin project. Essentially, we are trying to build a grid of x number of squares that when the user moves his/her mouse over the squares they either change color or leave a trail, all this depends on what the user selects.

After doing all the prep work for this exercise, it still managed to dive me crazy. Anyway, after about 6 hrs and little progress (aside from the html/css side) I had to throw in the towel. No, this doesn’t mean I’ve given up on it but my mind needed a rest and just couldn’t think about it. I will go back to the exercise after I practice some more with javascript/jQuery. I will finish it, just not now.

Your probably wondering how what I’ve explained above is “making progress”. Well, I shifted my thoughts back to ruby. I am very focused on trying to get a thorough foundation in ruby along with some front end languages before I move on to rails and building apps. To help build this foundation I have been playing around with some of the project euler problems. One in particular I struggled with for a long time when I was trying to solve it using javascript was problem 2.

Long story short, I started working on this problem last night in ruby and managed to solve it in about 2hrs. Now, I know that’s a long time and I am definitely not bragging. This has definitely been a step forward for me as it’s the first time I didn’t have to dig to deeply into books or google/stackoverflow. I was able to write down on paper how i thought it should be solved and then implement it step by step in the code….good day! Check out my solution here if interested: github
